CAC Pangoa was established in 1977, by a group of 50 coffee farmers. Today it has 684 members, of which 124 are women. Strongly committed to Fairtrade values, it has developed long-term relationships with buyers over the years and now also markets cocoa.
CAC Pangoa have been working on women’s empowerment since 1997, but only sold women’s coffee for the first time in 2016. This came about because some women had started putting signs up in their coffee fields saying ‘Coffee grown by women’. Esperanza Dionisio, the General Manager, showed a photograph of this to a UK buyer Taylors of Harrogate. Taylors had already been inspired to develop a coffee grown by women product by some talks given at SCA. Together these synergies this sparked the development of a limited edition Women’s Coffee product for the UK market, with support from Twin.
The coffee grown by women from Pangoa fetches an additional 10 cts/lb premium. 5 cts/lb of this is to reward high quality. The women involved chose to use the 5 cts/lb women’s coffee premium for a health-screening programme for cervical cancer. This programme is open to all women members of Pangoa and of CODEMU, Pangoa’s Committee for Women’s Development, which is made up of women members and wives and daughters of members. For Pangoa, marketing coffee grown by women is the result and the natural evolution of the work which has taken place to date to strengthen women’s self esteem and entrepreneurial spirit.
In addition Taylors of Harrogate has offered direct support to the women’s committee through training, and have made additional investments in their micro-credit scheme.
