With funding from DFiD's FRICH programme, Twin is working with a consortium of businesses to develop unique gourmet coffees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and bring them to market through Sainsbury’s in the UK.

The DRC coffee will be produced by Twin member co-operative Sopacdi, an inspiring organisation working to rebuild coffee production in its corner of the war-scarred East Congo region.

The project involves an intensive process of supply chain development to ensure the products’ quality, traceability, and social and environmental credentials. Sopacdi gained Fairtrade certification in June 2011 and converted to organic production earlier this year.

A special pack of Congo coffee was previously launched during 'Fairtrade Fortnight' in 2011 with a blend of coffees from the two sources and sold well in Sainsbury’s outlets.

Another Twin member in Malawi, Mzuzu Coffee, is also involved in the project and will be producing a single origin gourmet coffee that will be similarly marketed through Sainsbury’s. Twin has recently been working with members of Mzuzu on a sustainable agriculture project which has produced impressive results.
