Bukonzo Organic Farmers' Cooperative Union
Member farmers of Bukonzo Organic are faced with increasingly problematic threats to their environment such as soil degradation and infertility, landslides, future water shortages and climate change. To tackle these problems, farmers are engaged in learning essential sustainable agriculture techniques and adaptation strategies and are determined to continue producing excellent quality coffee.
In 2013 the organisation initiated a climate change assessment in order to develop a strategy for change. The process involved all staff and many farmers in collecting data, participatory workshops to identify farming problems and highlighted some solutions to implement. Small farmer groups were established as fora to continue to learn and share new techniques such as shade planting, and composting. Demonstration plots and well-trained field staff continue to provide ongoing support and inspiration to farmers.
